Civil Marriage in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s non-Muslim Court hears and resolves all family matters relating to non-Muslims under Law No. 14 2021 concerning personal status for non-Muslim foreigners. This allows non-Muslims to obtain a civil marriage, and it applies to UAE residents, non-resident visitors and tourists in the United Arab Emirates.

Civil Marriage Applications in UAE

The key legal requirements for a civil marriage in the UAE are that both parties are over 18 years of age, and that they consent to the marriage. Each party also needs to sign a form to acknowledge that they are not currently married to anyone else.

Applicants are not required to have their fathers or guardians approval, nor do they need a premarital screening certificate.

How to apply for a civil marriage in Abu Dhabi 

You can use the Interactive Case Registration (ICR) service on the Judicial Departments website, or visit the Family Court building in Abu Dhabi. The online platform is available in both Arabic and English.

You’ll need to submit the following documents:

  • A completed, signed marriage application form
  • A copy of your passport or Emirates ID (this applies to both parties)
  • Proof of no existing marriage
  • Marriage agreement, if applicable

Dress code for marriages should be modest attire that covers the shoulders, knees and upper arms. Wedding vows are pre-recorded and are available in a wide selection of languages
